Benefits of raised beds include improved drainage increase yields from a small space and expanded growing season and ease of maintenance. One disadvantage is increased drainage means more time spent watering replenishing the soil. Mixing in lots of organic material roughly 5% minimizes excessive dehydration. Straw, definitely not h a y increases retention of moisture and decreases weeds.
