A first garden for this family and Square Foot Gardening was a very appealing choice. Raised garden beds in a sunny and slightly windy location in Zone 8. The bottom three beds on the layout, as well as the two outer beds on the row of five are 10" deep. The middle bed on this row is 30" deep, and the remaning four are 20". We used SPF wood, however we treated it with a safe water based preservative treatment that hails from mariner traditions. Eco Wood Treatment and Lifetime Wood are two treatmnets available and one is LEED Certified. The soil is 15 yards of 50% compost, 25% peat and 25% perlite and came from NET ZERO which is OMRI Certified in Abbotsford BC (Organic Material Review Institute). We are getting great results and enjoying the salads and other greens at this point and soon much more. HAPPY GARDENING! And this Garden Planner was extremely helpful.
